I have been offered a position in Canada as a Clinical Fellow, and believe I require a work permit. I will be travelling with my wife and 2 children aged 4 and 18 months. We are all Irish citizens. What is the correct fee I need to pay?

The fee for a work permit is $150. Your wife is eligible for an open work permit, the fee is an additional $150. Your children are too young to be eligible for open study permits and do not require any documentation to attend kindergarten. Therefore the fee payable is $150 or $300 if your wife wishes to work.

You will require a work permit, the fee is $150. Your wife is not eligible for an open work permit as your occupation is not at a skilled level 0, or skilled category A or B in the National Occupational Classification. Your children are eligible for open study permits, the fee is $125 per child. Your total fee is therefore $525.

I have been offered a position as a Post-doctoral fellow at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada NSERC. I am a Chinese National. What is the correct fee for my situation?Do you have any advice about bringing or sending my personal belongings to Canada?

You require a work permit. You do not have to pay the processing fee of $150 for the work permit as you are a holder of an NSERC award, however as you are a visa national you are still required to pay for a temporary resident visa. The fee payable is $150 for a multiple entry visa or $75 for a single entry visa.

You and your spouse require work permits combined with temporary resident visas, the fee of which is $150 for each person. Your youngest child will require an open study permit combined with a temporary resident visas at a fee of $125. Your children aged 19 and 20 are not eligible for study permits as these are only applicable to primary and secondary education unless they apply in their own right. See www.canada.org.uk, study for information. They will, however, require temporary resident visas. The fee will therefore be $150 x 2 for yourself and spouse, plus $125 for your younger child plus $150 x 2 for multiple entry visas for the 19 and 20 year olds for a total of $725.

I will be travelling with my common-law partner who wishes to work or study while I complete my degree.  Is my partner eligible to do this and what is the fee payable? We are both British citizens.

The fee for a study permit is $125. Spouses and common-law partners of holders of valid study permits attending full time study at a post-secondary publicly funded degree granting institution may be eligible for an open work permit to enable them to take  employment in Canada. They are not eligible for open study permits, this can however be applied for inside Canada. The fee payable would therefore be $125 for yourself and $150 for your partner, total $275.

How much does the PR card cost?

For existing permanent residents:

The PR card costs $50.00 per applicant, including for children.

For new permanent residents:

The cost of cards for new permanent residents is included in the Application for Permanent Residence fee
