Once you have been accepted to study in Canada, you must obtain a study permit. To apply for a permit you must have:

a valid passport
a letter of acceptance from an educational institution
sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses and medical insurance

In addition to the above you must:

complete an application form
pay a processing fee and possibly complete an immigration medical
submit a study plan

Persons attending a university/school in Québec also require a Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from Québec Immigration prior to entry to Canada. To apply for a CAQ, please contact the academic institution in Québec where you have been accepted to study.

STUDY PERMITS FOR THOSE STUDYING IN CANADA FOR 6 MONTHS OR LESS:

Persons wishing to attend a course of six months duration or less, at any level, do not require a study permit. However, if there is the possibility that you will extend your period of study in Canada or if you are a full time student and wish to work on campus, you may apply for a study permit.

DEPENDANTS:

Spouses, common-law or same sex partners of holders of valid study permits may be eligible for an open work permit (provided they are not full-time students themselves). To be eligible applicants must provide a fully completed application (form IMM1295) plus evidence that they are the spouse or common-law partner of a holder of a study permit who is attending full-time study at a post-secondary publicly-funded, degree or diploma granting institution.

Accompanying children aged 6-18 years attending primary or secondary school are eligible to obtain a study permit. For all provinces/territories except Quebec a study permit must be obtained prior to entering Canada. You are not required to complete a separate application form, but the processing fee of $125 per study permit must be included when submitting your application as well as a copy of the identity page of the dependent’s passport and two passport photographs.  For those destined to Quebec you must apply for the study permit after arrival in Quebec.

Note: study permits are not required for children attending kindergarten or nursery school.

DO YOU NEED A TEMPORARY RESIDENT VISA?
(as well as a study permit
)

A visa may also be required. Please see the information on the TEMPORARY RESIDENTS (visitors) page for information on whether or not you require a visa.

Students are temporary residents to Canada and must satisfy a visa officer that they intend to return to their country of citizenship or be admitted to another country after completion of their studies.

The cost of a temporary resident visa is included in the study permit processing fee. However, any accompanying dependants who require temporary resident visas are required to pay the temporary resident visa processing fee (unless they are applying also for a study permit).  If your spouse, common-law or same sex partner requires a temporary resident visa s/he should complete a separate application.

In order to process an application for a study permit, you must submit the following items to this office by mail.
